چکیده

Although the spatial variability of water content is expected to be significant in heterogeneous, unsaturated media, its effect on solute transport has been neglected in most stochastic analyses. In this work we develop, evaluate, and numerically verify an analytical model describing the statistical moments of water content, soil water flux, soil water velocity, and solute spreading in the unsaturated zone under conditions of variable soil water content. Results are presented for a wide range of soil conditions. It is shown that soil water content variability increases with soil water tension and decreases with soil textural tortuosity parameter m. As expected, the water content variability also increases with those of soil texture and saturated hydraulic conductivity. However, at or above field capacity (near saturation) the water content variability is generally negligible. The water content variability is very large under dry conditions, even if the soil is relatively homogeneous. In the same soil, longitudinal macrodispersivity is generally smaller when including than when neglecting the variability in water content. Variable water content enhances longitudinal macrodispersivity only in soils with large horizontal anisotropy or soils with m , 2. In this case the enhancement is more significant in drier soils and at the early stages of plume displacement (less than 10l f). With travel distance the longitudinal macrodispersivity in the presence of variable water content converges to that in the absence of it.

Prediction of solute spreading during vertical infiltration in unsaturated, bounded heterogeneous porous media

In this study we investigate the effect of a water table boundary on solute spreading during infiltration in the vadose zone of heterogeneous soils. It has been found recently that the presence of the water table significantly affects unsaturated flow in a heterogeneous vadose zone and causes the flow to be spatially nonstationary. Because a vadose zone is by definition bounded by the water tab...

Solute Transport for Pulse Type Input Point Source along Temporally and Spatially Dependent Flow

In the present study, analytical solutions are obtained for two-dimensional advection dispersion equation for conservative solute transport in a semi-infinite heterogeneous porous medium with pulse type input point source of uniform nature. Estimation of zeolite application effect on solute transport parameters at different soils using HYDRUS-1D model

ABSTRACT-Application of models for simulation of solute and pollutants transport in soil can reduce time and costs for remediation process. HYDRUS-1D model was developed to simulate the one–dimensional flow of soil water, heat, solute and viruses in variably saturated–unsaturated porous media. The objective of this investigation is to determine the solute transport parameters in disturbed soil ...

Modeling flow and transport in a two-dimensional dual-permeability system with spatially variable hydraulic properties

Most field soils exhibit soil spatial variability as well as soil structure. The challenge is to account adequately for both types of spatial heterogeneity in simulation models. A numerical finite element code was used to compare singleand dual-permeability approaches for modeling variably saturated flow and transport in two-dimensional heterogeneous soil systems. The code was based on the Rich...
